Japanese Calligraphy Class

Experience the Art of Shodo. A Moment of Calm in Hirakata

The Art of Slowing Down: Japanese Calligraphy

Unwind, pick up the brush, and discover the beauty of Japanese calligraphy with a local friend.

Most people think of Japanese calligraphy as something formal, or even intimidating—like copying ancient sutras in a silent temple. At OEH, we see Shodo (the way of the brush) as a bridge between cultures and a perfect excuse to slow down.

In this 60 to 90-minute experience, you’ll step away from the crowded tourist trails and into a cozy, creative space. Led by an experienced local, you’ll learn how to breathe through each stroke. It’s an authentic opportunity to practice Japanese vocabulary, chat with locals, and leave with a piece of art that truly means something to you.

The Experience

Local Connection: This is a conversational, hands-on session where you can interact with a local guide who loves sharing their culture.

Mindful Practice: We focus on the meditative side of calligraphy. It’s about the rhythm of the ink and the focus of the mind, helping you find a sense of “Zen” in your busy travel schedule.

Practical Art: You’ll learn the meaning behind beautiful Japanese Kanji and practice words that resonate with your personality or your trip.

Everything is Ready: Don’t worry about bringing a thing. We provide all the professional-grade brushes, ink, and paper.

“I’d been running around Osaka all week and this was the first time I actually felt relaxed. It was just a cool way to spend an hour with a local and learn something real. I still have my ink drawing on my wall at home.”

FAQs: Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) at OEH

What exactly is Shodo, and how is it different from Western calligraphy?

Shodo, or "the way of the brush," is a meditative Japanese art form. Unlike Western calligraphy which focuses on uniform precision, Shodo emphasizes the flow of energy (Ki), the balance of white space, and the emotional state of the writer. You’ll learn to use a traditional brush (fude), ink stone (suzuri), and rice paper (hanshi) to express characters artistically.

Can I participate if I don’t know any Japanese characters (Kanji)?

Absolutely! Most of our guests are complete beginners. Our instructors will help you choose a meaningful Kanji character—such as "Peace," "Dream," or "Love"—and guide you through the specific stroke order. You don’t need to speak or read Japanese to create a beautiful, balanced piece of art.

Will the instructor help me create a Japanese name in Kanji?

Yes! One of the highlights of our workshop is the personalized naming session. Our staff can help translate the sound or meaning of your name into beautiful Kanji characters. You can then practice writing your own "Japanese name" to take home as a unique souvenir.

What kind of characters will we write?

We keep it simple and meaningful. We usually focus on basic Kanji like "Mountain," "River," or "Heart." If you're interested, the locals can help you find characters that sound like your name. It’s a great conversation starter!

Who are the "teachers"?

Instead of a formal "Master," you’ll be practicing alongside local residents and OEH staff. This makes the experience much more personal. You get to ask questions about daily life in Japan and chat while you practice your brushwork. It’s a "community-first" way to learn.

How long does the session last?

We usually spend about 1 to 1.5 hours together. It’s a low-pressure way to spend an afternoon in Hirakata, perfectly sized so you still have plenty of time to explore the neighborhood or catch a train to Osaka or Kyoto afterwards.

Your home base in the heart of Kansai

Perfectly placed between Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara, Hirakata is a quiet home base for the "real" Japan. Spend your mornings mastering a local craft and your afternoons exploring the big city sights—it’s the best of both worlds, with a friendly community to come home to.
